Governor General of Canada

Jack Burton comments:

I have been watching the Order of Canada Investiture ceremony in
Ottawa on the TV. The Governor General presides over this ceremony -
recognizing prominent Canadians for outstanding citizenship. I have been meaning
To congratulate Mr. Harper for some time on the appointment of Michael
Jean to the position of Governor General. It is one appointment that he has
made that shows the highest level of taste, appreciation of beauty and
that he indeed has passion. Michael Jean is beautiful, intelligent and
a most gracious head of state. I'm proud of her.
She's worth the price.

I must beg to differ - First I believe it was Paul Martin who put the latest Governor General in place and he did it for synical big "L" Liberal reasons.

I must admit that this GG has not embarrassed the office the way her
predecessor did but I would content that she has not fulfilled her role as head of the Armed Forces - nor could she with her CBC background.

What I wrote in 2005 still stands:

“I wonder why no one has addressed the main point of Campbell’s
article. Are we becoming anti-Capitalist and anti-Globalist? Has the disease of collectivism so permeated the country that we think this is a normal attitude?

The Governor General is the highest post (when the Queen is out of town)in the Country. It is no less a symbol than the national flag.
The Liberals managed to destroy the flag and have been doing their
utmost to destroy the office of Governor General. I guess they will never forgive Julian Byng.

The Governor General is the head of the Canadian Armed Forces, an
organization that is dependant on tradition to maintain morale and
effectiveness. The ascension of totally unqualified people who have no idea of the efficacy of military tradition is a slap in the face to our armed forces and further erodes its self-worth. But then again the Liberals never did like the military.

The choice of a woman who has spent her life milking the hind tit at the CBC while applying to become a citizen of the French Republic, our oldest enemy both philosophically and militarily, is a calculated appointment that will without a doubt denigrate the office of Governor General. We don’t even have to bring up the fact that her husband is in favour of destroying the Country, is a socialist and has consorted
with terrorists.

I think many in the world view us as a soft touch – an easy mark.
Canada can always be counted on to act outside of her best interests.
For those of us that are not preoccupied with re-electing the federal Liberals this is a very painful admission.”

Yes, I was mistaken about who appointed the current GG to office. In great part, I do agree with your statement made in 2005 with the exception of your comment about destroying the flag. At some point in time we must develop our own unique traditions and identity. The Maple Leaf has become a symbol recognized and respected around the world and that is good. The traditions of the Canadian Armed Forces are not dependent on the history of an ancient foreign power. We have had ample examples of valour and heroism since we have come of age as a fighting force in 1917. I think it is only fitting that we have developed a unique identity independent of any founding nation.

My comment about the suitability of the Governor General's demeanor at the Order of Canada Investiture was an observation of an isolated event.
It was in fact a non political view point of a rather minor ceremonial obligation that was carried out in a pleasing manner. The GG presented a refreshing variation to the pompous and stuffed shirt appearance of the bulk of very "important" politicians.
